Understanding inbound links.
Inbound links can be an important factor in a site's search engine rankings and site owners should, therefore, understand what inbound links are comprised of and how they can help as a part of a search engine optimization campaign.
The most important part of an inbound link is its anchor text. Anchor text is the part of a link that is displayed on a site and that is clicked on, to follow the link to its destination URL. The anchor text of an inbound link should always be one of the key words or phrases of the site being linked to and not just the site address e.g. a site advertising a television repair service might use something like "television repairs" as anchor text for some of its inbound links. It is also important to use a range of different anchor text phrases on different inbound links to cover all, or as many as possible, of the key words or phrases for which a site is being optimized.
Many of the major search engines keep a record of inbound links they find that point to a particular site and will assign a small weighting to that site for each link found. This assumes that the sites on which the inbound links are situated are of sufficient quality for the search engines to rate them highly enough to qualify for a weighting to be added for the target site. For instance an inbound link from one of a site's suppliers or from a respected Internet business directory will be worth more than one from a 'link farm' (a site comprising nothing but pages full of links).
